n.b. Stephen Strasburg, RHP Washington Nationals, is not a former Cape League player.
A few years ago on a bitterly cold winter morning, I had an opportunity to meet Jeff Bagwell at a kids' hitting clinic that took place inside Strike One, a large indoor facility just north of Boston. During a break in the action, Eric Wedge motioned to Bagwell and then gestured toward the stands where I was sitting with several other parents, and a few moments later he introduced me to his former teammate. Bagwell and Wedge had become good friends during their college years while playing summer ball on Cape Cod. Both eventually made it to the big leagues, having signed with the Red Sox in 1989. As we chatted about baseball for a few minutes, I was amused to hear that they still referred to each other as Bags and Wedgie.
I casually mentioned that everyone in my family was a fan of the Chatham A’s, and Bagwell's face lit up. He fondly remembered the town, the League, the fans, his host family, and even his part-time summer job: dishwasher at Friendly's.
When it was time for Wedge and his special guest to rejoin the large group of kids on their makeshift indoor field, I offered the National League MVP, Rookie of the Year, and four-time All Star a royal blue cap from a small-town team. He said he'd be pleased to bring that A's cap back home to his daughter in Houston, especially since he hadn't yet found her a souvenir.
We parted in the middle of a damp cage, but before he turned away, Jeff Bagwell offered his parting words: " Those were the best two summers of my life.”
Opening Day: Chatham @ Brewster 5pm
See you at the field!
Bags and Wedgie!! I love it. And now the A's are 3-0. Do they really have it this year? Go Chatham!
